Sunshine in Shrewsbury for 2021!
Great to be back at in Shrewsbury for the 8th Shrewsbury Quadrathon, it was cancelled due to Covid in 2020, but this year with some covid restrictions in place SYTRI were determined to give us a great event …. and that they certainly did! The weather this year was perfect, as always the race was brilliantly organized and the atmosphere buzzing, though for many of us it was back to racing for the first time since ‘Covid lockdown’ so a some apprehension on the start line, but with plenty of smiley friendly quadrathletes offering reassurance the nerves were soon gone!
The racing was good with PB’s and personnel triumphs from many first time Quadrathletes! There were 3 waves this year as wave numbers were reduced due to Covid restrictions first off Open and Vet 40, then Vet 50, 60 and 70 and then all the Ladies together.

In the men’s race Steve King dominated from the start, producing the fastest splits across the board, (1.29.30) he finished 5 mins ahead of Ryan Sneddon (1.34.24) who was in the same wave. Nigel Unwin in the 2nd wave was just beaten into 3rd place by 3 seconds (1.34.27) it certainly would of been a very close race if they had been racing in the same wave! Alexander Williamson came 4th (1.38.48) followed by BQA member and Race organizer Phil Holden (1.39.14) a brilliant effort by Phil who had been up to his eyes in organizing and making sure everything was in place for race day!
Sadly due to Covid there was no prize giving, just the top 3 in Male and Female. But having said that everyone was rewarded with a great celebratory 10 year Anniversary Technical T-shirt and beautiful medal, a really nice touch to celebrate this excellent event, I shall certainly be wearing mine with pride!
Male Winners and Congratulations to our BQA Members.

There were some fantastic performances from all of the women, strong racing from the age groupers and plenty of big smiles and positive feedback too! We also had lots of great efforts from all our BQA Members, a total of 20 racing at Shrewsbury! Great to see them flying the flag for us … Thank-you! The BQA really appreciate your support and valuable membership!

If we had a ‘Team Trophy’ it would of been presented to the ‘GIRLS, from MADCC a fine crew of 6 …. a huge well done to Natalie Abbott, Liz Dawson, Nicola Hamerton and Heike Chapman – inspired by our forever young ’70 year old twins’ Mary and Margaret!
However after the race, we did present the ‘BQA Eric Hattliff Memorial Trophy’ to Mary & Margaret this is given to an athlete showing his/her enthusiasm and commitment to the sport of Quadrathlon. Both Mary and Margaret have been doing Quads for many years now and along the way inspiring many people to give racing a try. During the past 2 years, they have been encouraging their team of ladies at Macclesfield Canoe Club to take part in several of our races, all of them love the camaraderie of the quad training and racing! So a big thanks to Mary and Margaret who will no doubt continue to inspire us for many more years.

The race makes the very most of Bude’s geography and features. The open water swim takes place within the shelter of Bude’s breakwater. The cycle ride includes some amazing coastal hills (including the 1 in 3 climb at Millook). The kayak leg takes place on the tranquil Bude canal. And the final run follows the canal towpath onto the coastal path and back to Bude. The fastest athletes will take around 3 hours to complete the course with most finished within 4 hours.

So after such a quiet season there isn’t a lot to report, but I did feel the need to keep in touch and wish you all well with your training over the winter months! I hope we all come out on the other side, ready for action with a full season of Quadrathlons in the diary.

So hears wishing you all a Safe and Happy Christmas and lets hope its going to be a Wonderful Adventurous New Year with our Race Heads Back On!!

along with the Millock Hill that took them back for a September Break! They enjoyed the Quad course and rumor has it they even did the bike course twice (though not on the same day!)
We were staying at a site on the bike and run course so drove down to Bude to catch the tide coming in. This was Donna’s first sea swim for many years and the sea had been kind with no waves and a small swell. The usual 2 laps were completed. Transition into the kayak as usual completing the normal course. Dodging the pedellos and rowing boats slowed things a little but being able to use the weed free centre channel made the time up. Transition out the kayak saw us driving back to the campsite.

Into the site for transition to the run. Jeff and I joined the route into Bude as usual. Donna famous for add-libbing decided to run the coast path.
‘Sprinkling the Fairy Dust’ – It’s been great company to have Lance Ball along side in all 5 of this years Virtual Quads, I certainly think this was one of the calmest and warmest a fitting tribute to Bude! Perfect conditions here in Chester on the River Dee warm calm and sunny… certainly ideal for our 4 disciplines, transition area was a bit tight in the backs of our cars but it was good to be out there and reminiscing about Bude Races gone by!
today we were there in spirit, lets hope its the real thing in 2021! Jean
David Jones and his Quad Friends at Manvers Lake doing there motivational multi session swim kayak and a run in and around the lake! If any one is near Manvers sessions like this go on most Sundays!
So today 6th September should of been the wonderful Shrewsbury Sprint Quadrathlon, unfortunately like all our Quadrathlons this season sadly Covid cancelled. However not to be disheartened and as always #makingthemost members of the BQA got their Quadrathlon Heads on, and did their own virtual quadrathlons!
Jean and Lance took to the water in Chester and completed a long version of the Sprint quad including an extended kayak and bike, the weather was beautiful and it brought back many memories of all those fantastic races organized by SYTri … we gave it our best shot and we can’t wait to be back in September 2021!
The river was swollen and flowing fast so for the 500m swim I tasted what a decent swimmer feels like finishing in around 6 minutes. Had it been against the flow I would still be there.
The kayak leg was out against the flow and provided some wobbly moments at the turn. The return leg was 2 mins quicker and a lot easier.
ll though these events are not the same with people passing me spurring me on it does act as a normalisation in these frustrating times! Fantastic effort Pete … we look forward to the Bude-ifull Report next weekend!
