‘Bomber’ Familiarization Days

Instead of the training camp which Lincsquad have organized over the past few years, this year they have decided to organize some ‘Bomber’ route familiarization sessions instead.

The dates are in May on 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th 16th 18th and 19th. Training will be available as ‘route familiarization’ and Lincsquad members have been allocated to guide prospective quadrathletes through the different disciplines routes. This is a great opportunity for those who are not sure of the routes, or those that fancy a training session on the course.

Anyone interested can contact Pete Chappill at petch0252@gmail.com with their preferred date times and discipline requirements.

Thank You Lincsquad …. a Great Offer open to all Quadrathletes!

Winter Multisport Training at Macclesfield

John Kavanagh is planning to do some kayak triathlons and duathlons over the winter. Anyone is welcome to join me, remembering that this is not an official club event and while looking out for each other, we all take responsibility for ourselves. They will take place on and around the Macclesfield Canal at Bollington starting at 9.30am

The Kayak triathlons will use the Macclesfield Canoe club Hare and Hounds events for the kayak leg (6.4km). (These are Club events and there is a £1.50 entry fee). Followed by a road cycle (22km) and a run on the Middlewood way (6km). Transitions will be in the car park, storing boat and bike in or on your car. The Hare and Hounds is a handicap race, slowest setting off first. The cycle part can be a social group ride or “go at your own pace”, depending on conditions. The run is a straightforward out and back. No rules, marshals or prizes, but there will be cake at the finish!

The kayak duathlons will be an experiment, with a view to putting on Official races. The initial plan is Kayak 4km, and then run 3.5km the same route on the towpath. There will be someone to watch over the kayaks on the canal bank during the running.
Updates on plans, details of routes etc. will be posted nearer the dates on the BQA and MADCC FB pages.

Winter Training Sessions at MADCC

Do you want to keep motivated over the Winter? Quadrathlete John Kavanagh is organizing some monthly training sessions in Macclesfield over the next 5 months. The format will be a 6.4km handicap kayak race, 22km bike ride and 6km run. The intention is, not serious racing but a good multi-session workout.

The dates will be the 2nd Sunday of the Month, Nov 10th, January 12th, February 9th, March 8th, April 12th.

Meet at Adelphi Mill, Grimshaw Lane, Bollington at 9:30 am. Bring your own hot drink for the finish, but there will cake or similar.

The Kayaking, Hare and Hounds part of the session is a MADCC event, so some rules apply. £1:50 per seat, BAs should be worn if division 7 or lower, other details on the MADCC website. Each paddler sets off based on their handicap time (from previous times or a “best” guess). Slowest first and fastest last, so that we all finish close together. Club boats can be used by MADCC members and, by prior arrangement, they might be available to non-members (a charge may apply).

The bike course is a bit up and down. I can send a .gpx file of the route to anyone that wants it, or we can arrange to cycle in groups of similar speed with people that know the route. We will not leave anyone unfamiliar with the route out on their own.

The run is a flat out and back route along the Middlewood Way. (Hard surface, possibly a few puddles).

The transition is in a car park next to the canal. Use your vehicle to store your boat and bike. We tend to be relaxed about transition. Changes of clothing may well be required. We are not racing but aiming for a good workout.

There are steep steps from car park to canal, but help can be available for getting boats up and down. We do not have toilets or changing facilities. Make sure you have appropriate clothing, bring a hot drink for the finish. There will be cake or something similar at the end.

Variations to the plan (e.g. for weather etc.) will be posted on the MADCC Forum, MADCC Facebook pages and BQA Facebook pages on the Friday or Saturday before each event, so please check there before travelling.

Tropical Quad Training Camp!

The Quadrathlon Camp certainly exceeded all our expectations, the location was stunning, the weather was absolutely fantastic, and the training sessions were just perfect, varied and inclusive to all the various standards of Quadrathletes that joined the camp! Lots of banter, great company plenty of laughs, lots of tips, training sessions and stories shared during the week … not forgetting Alan’s cake too!

Those that wanted did 3 sessions a day, nothing was compulsory and there were always plenty of options to do longer or shorter. The lake was beautiful for swimming, a tad cold at around 15C but so clear. We did lots of kayaking, most days for some of us, the wind certainly had a mind of its own, some days flat calm and other days challenging waves, all good for stabilization techniques in K1’s, it was the first time I’ve paddled my Tor through ‘white horses’ … exciting stuff!!

Time Trailers at the ready!!

The Biking was vary varied, from a hilly ride and a stiff hill climb up to the top of Llanberis, to a very fast time trial down to Porthmadog. There was a good trail road for running from the site and of course the beautiful mountain of Snowdon to run hike and walk up!

Llyn Gwynant Quad Options!

To top the week off we had our own ‘Llyn Gwynant Quadrathlon’ and as you can see from the map there were plenty of options to choose from – 3 swim distances, 3 bike distances, 1 – 5 laps on the kayak and 3 run distances … we even had a duathlon option!

So I would just like to say a huge Thank-you to Pete Chappill from Lincsquad that instigated the camp, it was chilled but at the same time we all worked as hard and pushed each other on! The training was thought out and planned really well! The beautiful weather really helped make it feel like a European Training Camp, we could of easily been in the Swiss mountains … so Thank-You Snowdonia for Blue Bird skies and Sunshine ….. a truly great week!

Hopefully we may do it all again next year ? The camp was for 8 days but athletes dipped in and out, so here’s an outline of the 5 middle days … just in case you fancy  ‘Camp 2020’

  • Sun – Kayak intervals (66,3333,111111mins) – Swim 1000m – Run Intervals (3 miles)
  • Mon – Bike 3 hours (inc Hill Climb) – Kayak intervals (88,44,2222,1111mins)
  • Tues – Snowdon Run/hike (8 or 13 miles) – Kayak (steady) – Swim 1200m
  • Wed – Bike TT (12 miles) Special Treat Coffee and Cake with the Dobbers!! Ride back supposed to have done a ‘Negative split’ but we ate to much cake!! Kayak intervals (5,4,3,2,1 x 2) – Kev’s Cross Fit!
  • Thurs – ‘Llyn Gwynant Quad’ various distances taking between 2 and 3 hours.

So a Big Thanks again to all that came and made it great fun! Pete Chappill, Kev Lovett, Donna and Jeff Chappill, Liz Dawson, John Redmond, Alan Cole, Lance Ball and Jean and Dave Ashley.

P.S haven’t mentioned the great food, BBQ’s and the odd Beer and Bottle of Red …. goes without saying that went down very well too!!!!

Grant for K1’s for Shrewsbury Canoe Club.

Quadrathlete ‘Phil Holden’ has been working with Shrewsbury Canoe Club to get a grant from Sport England for K1’s to help encourage and improve flatwater paddling at the club.

The grant has now been awarded and they will shortly be getting 6 new K1s and paddles to help establish the flatwater paddling group.  They hope to introduce kayakers and newcomers alike, to the K1 racing boats, and hopefully introduce members into our sport of Quadrathlon.

Gill Otto from Shrewsbury C.C. was the instigator of the wonderful Shrewsbury Sprint Quad race and Phil Holden has take over this year, working along side SYTri. They are both continuing to share their passion and spread the word of ‘Quadrathlon’. Phil races most of the BQA Quad Races, and Gill having been organizing for the past few years has decided to put back on her ‘Quad Lycra’ and will be racing the Deva Divas Ladies Only Quad in Chester! Both these athletes love to encourage others and would be only to pleased to see you at the Canoe Club. So If your in the Shrewsbury Area and wish to improve your flatwater paddling please dont hesitate to get in touch with the Canoe Club and book into one of their sessions.
