A Truley Awesome Foursome 2014

A great crowd of supporters!

A Fantastic Race to finish the 2014 Season … the weather was kind with the sea a pleasant 17 degrees though a little choppy for us non sea swimmers! The surfers showed us the way with some very fast swim times from the Local surf Team members. There was very little wind and the conditions were warm … the only issue some were worried about was the daylight! It was a late start 3.30 due to the tide but everyone made it back just in time!

The Age group athletes were out in force the over 50’s being the biggest age groups male and female though the standard was high across the board with some excellent times and good clean racing! Local Andrew Smith, was out of the swim followed by some strong local swimmers, off on the bike the tough climbs would soon sort out the field. Chris Hammond powered around the course and moved into the lead, but hot on his heels were seasoned Quadrathletes Nigel Unwin  and Ian Smith, plus Andrew Smith.

Paddling strong Nigel Unwin

There were some fast bike times on the demanding course so it was down to some good strong paddling to split up the field. Nigel took the lead with Ian closing in. He took the lead it was a close paddle with Ian moving ahead with just a minuet in hand.

Ian ran well and extended his lead on the run and went on to win with just 1min 30secs to spare. Nigel came in 2nd  with local triathlete Chris Hammond in 3rd place.

The standard of racing was high with some fast times, it was great to see a strong contingent of BQA athletes all producing good results – In the Vet 50 category Duncan Pearson came 3rd and is improving very well in his kayak. Russel Breyer and John Kavanagh had a great races coming 5th and 6th . Peter Chappill racing on his own, came 9th  he can frequently be seen leading Jack Gardner (partially sighted). A huge improvement too from John Redmond, this was certainly the toughest race he’d done … and a fantastic achievement (sorry if I mislead him I did say the course was a bit undulating!!)

In the Vet 40 category BQA athlete Phil Holden was the highest placed, he finished with a big smile (as always) despite his capsize in the kayak … it did get a bit choppy as the wind blew up the canal. Julian Brewer came 7th and Lance Ball again new to the sport has had a full season had a good result in 8th place.

Our young BQA member Rob Jefferies (21yrs) has had a brilliant season too, he won his age group and also a World Cup Globe. Will Jackson (17yrs) also won his race and a World Cup Globe. Let’s hope they both continue to race Quadrathlon and keep raising the bar!

In the Ladies race, it was a lovely surprise to see ex World Quad Champion Helen Dyke on the start line, as before she was as good as ever taking the lead from the start. She swam well and had a strong bike, her weakest discipline also went fairly well …. And once Helen puts her running shoes on nobody can touch her, well done good to see her back! Newcomer to the sport Judith Humpleby was next out of the swim and local athlete Jess Lynes (both vet 50’s) both enjoying the sea. Ali Martin and Jean Ashley came next, once again the bike would sort out the placings. Ali moved into 2nd place, and hung onto that to the finish. Jean put in a strong kayak overtaking Judith and moved into 3rd. Mary White (vet 60) had another good solid race coming a very creditable 5th a superb result for her first year in Quadrathlon.

Peter Appelt

The only German starter was Peter Appelt, at 65 years old, he has completed his 10th Quadrathlon this year, he was second behind Tony Richards a newcomer to our sport along with along with Sue Rix, its very encouraging to see competitive racing in the over 60’s!

Once again it was great to see newcomers to our sport, and lots of teams in the event lets hope they enjoyed the race – its such a fantastic venue, I hope they will be back to support it again next year …. And maybe support our other Quadrathlons up and down the country!

A huge Thank-you to Simon Hammond and his Brilliant Family and Happy Team of Helpers! Once again you gave us all a great race, superb racing and superb conditions. Bude was buzzing with atmosphere … we certainly showed the town how to enjoy ourselves and impressed many onlookers. Big Thanks again from the BQA and the WQF to the Organizing Team the Quadrathlon certainly lived up to its name AWESOME  …. get it in your diaries for next year 19th Sept … Be There!!!!

WORLD CUP FINAL STANDINGS http://www.quadrathlon-online.de/ergebnisse/2014/14-w-cup.pdf

Box End Quadrathlon 2014

Sorry for the delay in the Box End Quadrathlon results and National Trophy Standings, I’ve just returned to reality after a couple of weeks in the Alps!

It was a great shame Box End suffered from low numbers, only 15 athletes took part, 14 in the Quad and 1 in the Tri.  Its a great shame, and as Mark Pryor said  ‘this may well put the race in jeopardy, if numbers do not improve this could well be the last year of this race’. A great shame as all the competitors that entered really enjoyed this tough little race!

Congratulations to overall winner Nigel Unwin, (1.51.50) still in fine form after his vet 50 tittle at the Worlds. He was being chased by much improved (since last year) Phil Holden who came in just 25 seconds later (1.52.15). Will Thurrell came in 3rd (1.56.06). Followed closely by a very quick bunch of over 50’s … this is certainly going to be a closely fought battle in the National Trophy Series!

Congratulations to Mary White the only female in the race, she had a very good race and had some excellent splits and came a very creditable 10th overall … well done Mary!

John Kavanagh quoted ‘Three of us made it from Macclesfield Canoe Club,  Nicholas Price, Mary White and I, although it was only a small turn out we enjoyed. Its a great venue for a short distance race and the terrain makes the bike course a lot tougher than the distance suggests. Thanks very much to Mark and the organising Team’.

The National Trophy Results are hotting up after 3 Races, with just two more races left in the Series Shrewsbury Sprint, and the Awesome Foursome, Bude. Remember 3 races to count and you have to be a 2014 BQA member to have a trophy or prize. At the moment Phil Holden is winning (294 pts) with John Kavanagh in close 2nd (292pts), also winning Vet 40 and Vet 50 respectively. Robert Jefferies is winning the Under 23’s. In the Ladies Series Sarah Allars is winning (220pts) with Mary White just behind and winning Vet 50’s (217pts). Unfortunately the Fabian 4 is cancelled, so get your entries in for Shrewsbury and Bude if you want to increase your BQA points and make a difference!

Norfolk Superhero Quadrathlon 2014

Another fantastic year for the Norfolk Superhero Quadrathlon, The Charity Race had 170 competitors they all went out and came back in fantastic style! They have raised over £40,000 for Nelsons Journey which is AMAZING!

The BQA would like to send our congratulations to Jess, Riddy, and the whole Norkolf Superhero Team,  what a brilliant event, superbly organized and it gets booked up every year … so if you fancy the challenge in 2015 keep posted to their website, as to when the entries open!

The Race is SWIM – 1 mile from Gun Hill to the Quay at Burnham Overy Staith (on incoming tide), followed by a KAYAK – 4 miles through Creeks of Burnham Overy Staith. Then a CYCLE – 45 miles circular route on North Norfolk’s scenic roadsand finally a RUN – 8 miles accross tracks, sand mud and marsh!

South Yorkshire Quad 2014

The first South Yorkshire Quadrathlon was held at Manvers Waterfront Boat Club on Sunday 15th June. A small but enthusiastic and very competent group of athletes took part.

The race started with a 1600m swim, divided into two laps. Phil Jumeau led the way closely followed by John Kavanagh and Nigel Leeson.  Manvers Lake is a purpose built leisure lake which is a popular venue for open water swimming and the water quality was excellent.

The kayak route was eight longer laps taking competitors around the swim buoys and the two islands. Ian Smith took an impressive lead on this leg and John Kavanagh paddled well to maintain his second position. The good humoured volunteers counted laps and kept the competitors well informed and encouraged as they completed each circuit.

The 18 mile bike route took competitors out towards the A1, following signs for Doncaster. It was an undulating route with a steady climb up to the village of Hickleton. The roads were busy,  but wide with a cycle lane for part of the route. The turn point was the roundabout at the A1 junction and competitors enjoyed the descent from from Hickleton on the return! Phil Holden, Nigel Leeson and Paul Belcher all put in strong bike legs, improving their overall positions.

The 10K run was off road, along limestone paths.  It was two 5K laps out along the Transpennine trail and back along the lakeside. Ian Smith held his lead and was the overall winner. In spite of a change of wet suit due to a broken zip on the start line, and a puncture at the finish of the bike leg, John Kavanagh finished in a well deserved second place. Duncan Pearson had a storming run, passing several of his fellow competitors and finishing in third place.

The first lady home was Sarah Allars with a strong consistent performance across all four disciplines and Nicola Heaton, who was positive and managed to keep smiling throughout the race, was the second lady.

This was a very successful first event. The venue was excellent and the race had been well planned around a single transition point on the lake front. Congratulations and thanks go to Mark Benton for setting up the event and for his organisation on the day. Mark and his team were very welcoming and succeeded in keeping the event simple, informal and very friendly.  The toilets, showers and changing facilities were first class and the café was an added bonus at the end of the race. The event attracted interest and support from locals walking round the lake and using the leisure facilities, and seemed to fit in and entertain rather than disrupting other lake users.

Mark welcomed the constructive feedback from competitors after the event and recognised the need to make a few tweeks to the signage on the bike and run course! He is hoping to run the event next year, possibly alongside a triathlon. Hopefully it will attract more competitors and become into a regular event on the quadrathlon calendar.

Ian Smith

A note from race organizer Mark Benton – He has had many emails from athletes, saying they’d had a good time and enjoyed the race and the venue. Organizer Mark quoted ‘what a great set competitors we had, even though it was a small and really friendly event’.

There were only 14 entries but that was ok, as we have tested the venue and the set up for the event and it works fine we are looking forward to putting on a great event next year One person went wrong on the bike, so he will improve the signage for next year. We may also put a triathlon at the same time, so the tri and quad swim together then do the bike together then quad splits off and does the paddling, then both do the run.

Manvers Waterfront Boat Club are a  rapidly growing multi sports club based at Manvers Lake in Wath-upon-Dearne, South Yorkshire.  Activities based at the club so far include canoeing & kayaking, triathlon, running, open water swimming, windsurfing,  sailing, fishing, model boating, sub-aqua, biking and wildlife conservation. They have organized plenty of events but this was their first Quadrathlon, the BQA feel it was an great  event  and well worthy of ‘Trophy Status’ we are very excited about the future of this new race at a superb venue with showers, changing rooms available, and an on site café.

Brigg Bomber 2014 Top of the World!

What an amazing day for British Quadrathlon, the BQA are extremely  grateful to Lincsquad for putting on a fantastic race, truly worthy of World Championship status! Everyone I spoke to has been blow away by how much effort had been made by Lincsquad, along with the support from the sponsors and the town ‘Brigg’. Believe me it was a very wonderful World Championships, every single athlete was made to feel so special! There were so many positive comments, the atmosphere was brilliant, everyone loved it Great Britain couldn’t of done it without you!
BE PROUD LINCSQUAD, you have certainly given the BQA and British Quadrathlon the best BOOST we have ever had!!

Male Winners World Champ Steve King
Female Winners World Champ Sharon Colley

The standard of racing was World Class, with strong male and female athletes coming from Czech and Germany to defend their titles. Team GB (BQA members) took advantage of the championships being on home turf and had their strongest and biggest Team ever, a huge thank-you to all 36 of you racing for our GB Quad Team! Without your support (your BQA memberships), we would have no BQA (Governing Body) and so we wouldn’t be able to affiliate to the World Quadrathlon Federation, who allow us to host these amazing Championship Races.

As in true BQA style our GB Team is made up of BQA Members, who are at the top of British Quadrathlon, but just as important to us, it is also made up from members who want to share their passion, and spread the word for our sport! The BQA wish to thank every single member of the Team, for giving your very best and flying the flag for us, you have put British Quadrathlon back on the World Map!

We’ve had some amazing Results, Congratulations to Steve King and Sharon Colley who are the 2014 World Champions! We also hold a host of Age Group World Champions … A Brilliant Effort from Team GB ….  Thank you all so much!

A special mention to 3 family members that raced, John Kavanagh (7th Vet 50) and his 2 twin sisters both competing in their first ever Quadrathlon, Mary White and Margaret Huyton coming 1st and 2nd in Vet 60 age group, it was a very special moment when Margaret crossed the finish line, she may of been last, but in many eyes she was ‘first’ truely inspirational! Also Jack Garner lead by Peter Chappill finishing his first full distance Quadrathlon … another winner!

These are the main results, but I am sure every single one of you are very pleased at what you have achieved. I know you have all put in plenty of training, which isn’t easy over four disciplines especially through the colder months. Race Report

By what some would call typical British weather-Brigg North Lincolnshire put on a wonderful World championships (middle distance). Quality field of Top athletes and hardened masters!

After a false start – where the whole field was brought back, saw the nervous field start and a group of three form with Favorites Steve King, Tom Stead and German Stefan Teichert who strung the field out with a one minute lead at the end of this river swim.

Adam and Michael

After a very quick transition we saw King take the lead and with one of the fastest kayak splits to build a lead going into the bike. Teichert positioned himself well in second, but then had to let Mike Masson go into second place. 4th saw fastest paddle Adam Norfolk (GB) and the 5th Leoš Roušavý and youngster Stead in 6th.

On The bike King was steaming along and only built on his lead. Tom Stead On the bike was just a Machine and rode himself into a chance of a top placing with a bike time four minutes faster than anybody else. Behind saw Teichert, Rousavy, Norfolk, Masson and Steve Clark (local man) fighting out for the Podium.

In the run we saw King cruising and enjoying the win-although Tom Stead chased hard and showed he is the talent for the future finishing only 14 seconds down. Roušavý completed a good race to finish third.

The ladies race saw Favourite Lisa Hirschfelder come out of the water two minutes ahead. But then in the kayak we saw Sharon Colley paddle an incredible time that only five men could top. Also British lady Claire Moran put in a top paddle performance to move in to second place.

On the bike Hirschfelder caught Moran and cut the lead down from Colley. Colley pushed on hard in the run and kept her lead. Lisa (GER) put in a great performance to finish 2nd and GB finished on the podium again with Claire Moran’s top performance. Veteran athlete Jean Ashley gained on Claire Moran on the bike, but they both had similar run splits so Jean came home in 4th, but 1st Vet 50. With Sarah Allars having a superb run coming home in 5th.

In the Mens Vet categories we had Mat Stephenson (V40) being chased down by Nigel Unwin (V50) and Ian Smith (V50) all fighting for places. Mat came home 3rd Vet 40, with Nigel 1st Vet 50, just holding off Ian Smith. It was great to see 2 of our original Quadrathletes in the Over 60’s catagory. Ian Hipkins and Paul Belcher both have been racing Quads since they originated. Paul won the Vet 60’s and finished a very creditable 21st overall.

Some excellent racing by all age groups, Lincsquad did a sterling job to make a fantastic race and will deserved the title world championships. All good for the future of the great sport.

CAMPING at the RACE – Please note following discussions with the other members of the Committee it has been decided that due to the building work at the Leisure Centre during the Keyo Brigg Bomber we will not be able to offer the usual camping or parking beyond the front car park (specifically the grassed area past the all weather pitch and skatepark).

However we have arranged with Peter and Vida at the King William pub (approximately 1km away and where we hold our Wednesday night TT’s) to use the area at the back of the pub, they have very kindly offered to open up early for breakfasts too!
Can anyone thinking of camping/pitching a caravan let us know so we have an idea of who to expect?
