Quadrathlete Success at 2017 Devizes to Westminster Race
The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race is a race which quite a few of us Quadrathletes have done in the past, its a race which I love and have done several times. Everyone that has done it will know how special the challenge is, and what a tough race the 125 miles are, so at Easter I always look at the start list to see who is going to set out on this amazing journey! Without a doubt you’ll always find a Quadrathlete on the start list, and this year was no exception there were 5 of you, and I’m really pleased to say they all finished in True Style!
In the Non Stop K2 Race – Congratulations to Quadrathlete Steve King and Shaun Thrower they has a brilliant race and finished in 18:44:52 4th Overall and 1st Vet Finishers, they also won the Team Prize for the fastest 3 crews over the finish line from all from Hereford Canoe Club (where plenty of good paddlers are in training for Quads this year).
Quadrathlete John Durrant and Geoff O’Grady also doing the non stop race came home in 27:51:47
In the K1 Race which is over 4 days Quadrathlete Ian Smith had a fantastic race 18:32:31 finishing 3rd Vet and taking the 1st over 50 prize. Another Quadrathlete from the past Simon Derham had a great race also 20:05:34 finishing 7th Vet.
Sam Plummer (who has race in a few of our quads/he came 3rd at the Fabian 4 Mountain Tri just behind Steve King) he had a superb race winning the senior K1 race in 15:54:07
Congratulations to them all … a fantastic achievement!
The Race starts in Devizes, Wiltshire, finishing just downstream of Westminster Bridge in central London, opposite the Houses of Parliament. The race has been held annually over the Easter Weekend since 1948.
The race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington. The final 17 mile section is on the tidal portion of the Thames.
The race is a severe test of skill, physical and mental stamina and planning which produces a memorable sense of achievement for those successfully completing it. DW Race Overview
