Save the Children to host Australia’s first ever quadrathlon in May 2014.
Save the Children will hold Australia’s first ever quadrathlon in the Murray River region in May, combining traditional triathlon events of running, swimming and cycling with a 26 km paddle down the Murray River. About 400 people are expected to take part in the inaugural event, ranging from amateurs to some of the best triathletes and multi-sport athletes in Australia.
“Save the Children is delighted to host the Murray Quad, which offers a fantastic opportunity for athletes and amateurs to compete together while raising vital funds to support and protect children around the world,” said Brett Long, Save the Children’s Adventure Events Manager.
“It will be a gruelling event comprising a range of different skills over a very long period of time. It’s also a great team building event, with relay teams with up to eight people allowed.
“Competitors will be able to draw added inspiration from Save the Children’s work helping vulnerable children across every state in Australia and in more than 100 countries, including the Philippines for the response to Typhoon Haiyan, and the Middle East for the Syrian Refugee Crisis.”
The race will start at the Yarrawonga Rowing Club with a 3km swim on Lake Mulwala, before winding its way through the countryside to Cobram and finishing in Tocumwal on the Murray River.
The running leg will be 20kms and the ride 80kms for a total distance of 129kms, making the Murray Quad the longest quadrathlon event in the world!
The Murray Quad was initially founded by Yarrawonga-Mulwala Canoeing Club and Canoeing Victoria, who fully support Save the Children’s vision of making this a highlight of the Australian multi-sports calendar.
“We’d like to thank Canoeing Victoria for their support to date and look forward to working with them to ensure the event reaches its full potential over the years ahead.
Registrations will open in late January.
